In this new edition, considerable space has been devoted to building boats in aluminium alloys, glass fibre reinforced plastics, and steel. These materials have certain advantages over wood, but for amateur work, wood is likely to remain the cheapest and handiest medium for boat construction. The advent of reliable grades of waterproof plywood has given timber new advantages, while the cost of imported wood has not risen so steeply as metals and plastic of recent years, Labour costs in the boatyards have soared enormously and this has helped to make amateur boat building even more worthwhile.
