The cultivation of oysters and other bivalves was one of the earliest forms of aquaculture and here one can review the developments in the industry over the past fifty years, survey present conditions and techniques, and study likely future trends. Dr Walne updated his book shortly before his premature death. His work was so highly regarded that an annual memorial lecture has been established by the Shellfish Association of Great Britain. The rearing techniques he employed are described here in detail, particularly those concerning Ostrea edulis and Crassostrea gigas and also the French butterfish, the Chilean mussel and the American quahog. This book was published for the Buckland Foundation.
