An outgrowth of the National Indicator Study, this comprehensive, current reference provides a thorough literature review and a wide range of practical information with respect to microbial and chemical indicators of pollution; shellfish safety with respect to enteric viruses and bacterial pathogens and their relationship to environmental indicators, including the characteristics of the organism, its survival in the environment, the illness, and the methodology for recovering the organism; methodology, including rapid methods and emerging technologies; and the phenomenon of cell injury, along with variable but nonculturable cells. Changes in indicator and pathogen populations during handling and storage of shellstock are treated at length.
