This is a Symposium volume, apparently with additions, from a U.K. Society of Experimental Biology meeting in Aberdeen in 1980. It is now 1984 (although to be fair the publication date on the volume is 1983). Nevertheless, in fast moving areas of research, such as satellite oceanography or primary production, the volume will rapidly become historical rather than current. A chapter on the latter subject, for instance, notes only about six papers as late as 1980 in a bibliography of about 100 citations. The subjects covered are very wide in range, and also include submersibles, research vessel design and logistics, high pressure experimental and field sampling techniques and tracking fish at sea. It is not clear who would want to know in detail about all of these things, but I can see a utility for a researcher wanting to look up recent techniques and the general state of the art in an area unfamiliar to him, or perhaps graduate students needing some general overview of the whole field.
