Quando fotografo sott'acqua mi sento in uno stato di grazia, penso sia una condizione comune a molti subacquei, ma per me, in lotta con problemi di peso sin dall'adolescenza, il mare è stato sempre un luogo nel quale rifugiarmi e, grazie alle sue leggi fisiche, sentirmi libero. Il titolo di questo volume fotografico "Into the mirror" (Nello specchio), realizzato interamente nelle acque del Golfo di Napoli, città in cui vivo, ha per me un doppio significato, quello del luogo fisico, inteso come "specchio" d'acqua, poiché era importante rimarcare che questo lavoro è stato realizzato in uno spazio di mare molto limitato rispetto alla Sua immensità, il mare sotto casa, in un luogo quasi intimo; il secondo significato, ben più profondo (termine quanto mai appropriato), scaturisce dal secondo verso di una poesia di Baudelarie, che da sempre ho sentito molto mia, "L'uomo e il Mare", nella quale quest'ultimo non sarebbe altro che lo specchio in cui l'essere umano si riflette riconoscendo le angosce delta propria anima, rimanendone, nel contempo, innegabilmente ammaliato. La mia modesta ed umile pretesa è quella, di non avere prodotto solo delle immagini naturalisti che subacquee, dei meri ritratti di organismi che vivono nelle acque del nostro mare, ma di avere, in un certo qual modo,tentato di raccontare, la meraviglia e lo stupore che ho provato le innumerevoli volte che forme di vita così affascinanti si sono presentate davanti al mio obbiettivo e ad i miei occhi increduli, come fossero stati quelli di un bambino ... A voi lettori l'ultima parola se vi sono riuscito! - Whenever I photograph underwater, l'm in a state of grace. I guess, many divers might feel the sa me way. Far me, though, it's because I've struggled with weight issues since I was an adolescent and the sea has always been a special pIace for me, a pIace where I could both seek refuge and be free. The material far this book came entirely from the Gullf of Naples, the city where llive. Its titfe, "Into The Mirror" conveys a dauble meaning: firstly, it's a physical pIace, interpreted as the water being a mirror. I wanted to emphasize that my wark was carried aut in a relatively canfined area of the sea, when compared to its collective immenseness; the second meaning, which is much more profound, derives from the second line of a poem by Baudelaire, "Man and the Sea" of which f have always been fondo. In the poem, the sea represents the mirror in which man views himself and his anguish, yet he is undeniably fascinated by it. My modest hope was to not simply create naturalistie images, mere pictures, of the organisms that reside in these local waters of our sea. It was more a desire to share the wonder and amazement that I fell every time such incredible creatures appeared in front of my lens and eyes, incredulous, like those of a child, exploring the world for the very first time.
