Sono intorno a Venezia e le fanno corteggio, quasi ancelle a regina, da forse venticinque isolette. Direbbesi che la meravigliosa città, caduta dal cielo e scheggiatasi in qualche parte, spargesse a se intorno questi frammenti di sua bellezza. Ma lasciando tali ed altre siffatte immaginazioni a' poeti, diremo non essere alcuna per avventura di tante isolette che non attragga a se l'attenzione, non abbia la propria storia, e non porga quindi materia d'eruditi ragionamenti. Parleremo di presso che tutte con brevi parole, raccogliendo da più libri le sparse, e non raramente incerte e discorsi notizie che se ne hanno per mettere poi un qualche ordine nel nostro discorso, divideremo le isole poste a mezzodi da quelle che rispondono a tramontana; divisione seguita da altri che scrissero prima di noi su questa stessa materia. You might suppose that the marvellous city, falling from the sky and shattering into pieces, had scattered all round herself these fragments of her beauty. But leaving these and other such imaginings to the poets, we shall state nonetheless that there is not one of these many islets that does not call attention to itself in some way, or that is without its own history and deserving therefore of erudite discussion. It is our intention here to assemble the scattered and often uncertain sources, and give a brief description of each. To bring order to our disquisition, we shall divide the islands into those of the southern and those of the northern regions of the lagoon, a division already imposed by previous authors in their writings on the subject."
