«Mare Internum» è la testata di una rivista moderna, che vuole avere una voce nuova, modulata su di una eco antica. Per questo, vuole essere memoria storica del passato e insieme stimolo culturale propositivo. In campo scientifico ed in campo editoriale lo scopo è quello di ampliare i presunti limiti naturali della rivista, per gettarli oltre il “già visto”: non più ristretti al solo mondo classico, ma bensì comprensivi della storia di tutti i paesi che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo, nel nome di un'intelligenza complessiva del passato che è fondamento di scelte attuali, civili e tolleranti. Rivisitando, non a caso, la definizione geografica che fu di Eratostene, terzo illustre bibliotecario ad Alessandria d'Egitto, la Direzione ed il Comitato scientifico, insieme con l'Editore, intendono proporre il riscatto dell'ormai desueta connotazione del Mediterraneo come mare chiuso, soprattutto utile agli scambi delle civiltà che attorno vi prosperarono. I termini della nuova ipotesi ideologica intendono provare, come per una riappropriazione collettiva, che questo 'mare interno' fu un teatro aperto al ricambio, ai confronti ed alle trasformazioni per innumerevoli popoli e avvincenti culture che a questo mare appartengono. La suggestione è di Fernand Braudel. Insomma, un'area viva e vitale che ha originato fenomeni unici nella storia dell'uomo, di rara e alta qualità scientifica. Per questo, la testata intende proporsi come strumento di lavoro nuovo per quei filoni di ricerca, attivi sui campi d'indagine attorno a questo mare, che intendono approfondire lo studio di culture diverse o affini, autonome o integrate sullo sfondo di un palinsesto storico articolato e aperto, a tutti utile, crediamo, a tutti necessario. Alla rivista si affiancheranno volumi monografici di supplementi, a carattere tematico, il cui compito sarà quello di approfondire e sviluppare le singole vie di ricerca che la testata ed il sottotitolo della rivista stessa esplicitano con trasparente chiarezza. «Mare Internum» is the name of a modern journal that will speak in a new voice modulated on an ancient echo. Thus it will be at once an historical memory of the past and a propositional cultural stimulus. In both the scientific and the editorial field, the aims is to extend the journal's presumed natural limits and to cast them well beyond the déjà vu: not merely restricted to the classical world but including the history of all the countries that look out upon the Mediterranean Sea, in the name of an allembracing understanding of the past that is key to the civil and tolerant choices of this present day. Having by no chance matter pondered over the geographical definition pronounced by Eratosthenes, the third illustrious librarian at Alexandria, the Director and the Scientific Committee, together with the publisher, intend to propose the redemption of the now outmoded connotation of the Mediterranean as a closed sea, above all useful for exchanges between the civilizations that prospered around it. The terms of the new ideological hypothesis intend to prove, as if by a process of collective reappropriation, that this 'internal sea' was a theatre open to changes, to comparisons, and to transformations for the countless peoples and exciting cultures that belong to this sea. The suggestion was Fernand Braudel's. In short, a lively, vital area that has given rise to unique phenomena in the history of mankind, of rare and elevated scientific quality. The journal's aim is thus to propose itself as a new working instrument for lines of research involved in fields of activity around this sea focusing on in-depth studies of cultures, be they different or kindred, autonomous or integrated, against the background of an open and articulated historical palimpsest that is, we believe, useful to all and necessary for all. The journal will be integrated with monographic supplementary volumes of a thematic character, the purpose of which will be to extend and develop the individual paths of research that are expressed with transparent clarity in the journal's title and subtitle.
