The present publication has two objectives. First of all it intends being an incentive for readers to go and visit and enjoy the striking scenery and habitats of the Delta. Secondly, it intends being a guidebook for prospective visitors wishing to tackle the over 150 kilometres of canals and lagoons easily accessible to the general public, that may be freely self-toured or visited with the assistance of a guide, offering them useful information and suggestions to make their visit a truly memorable experience. Actually, there are well over a thousand kilometres of navigable canals and lagoons in the Delta, but visiting them all requires special skill, patience and caution. The project also envisages two other aids for the prospective visitor, namely a handbook with instructions and recommendations for safely navigating the canals and lagoons and an e-navigation system by way of a GPS station with related maps. Further information and images may be had by accessing the project’s website at www.navigaveneto.it. The Po River Delta, two thirds of which is managed by the Veneto Regional Authority, is an extraordinary asset, as yet poorly exploited and of which the general public in Italy and Europe is largely unaware. Yet it is a highly evocative, unspoiled habitat of rare beauty well worth visiting and offering the visitor a wide range of leisure activities and unique culinary delights of bygone times. This short guide intends being a further even if small contribution for attracting visitors to the Delta, helping them to discover and appreciate what it has to offer even more.
