The difficult geographic-historical question which arises in connection with P?r? Re’?s' book consists in how to explain the origin of his charts. Modern research mainly focused its attention on the surviving part of his map of the world. In the case of the Ba?r?ye, the assumption that the Isolario by Benedetto Bordone (1528) had been the source is the all too easy answer. First of all, when writing the first or the second edition of his book on navigation in the Mediterranean in 1521 and 1524 respectively, the Ottoman mariner could hardly have used an Italian book as a source that was only published in 1528. Furthermore, a historian should not disregard the possibility that both, Bordone and P?r? Re’?s, had directly or indirectly followed an older source and were part of a common tradition.
