This report is based on the papers presented at the third meeting of The International Symposia on Boat and Ship Archaeology, held at the Swedish National Maritime Museum in Stockholm in September 1982. It is also the first international presentation of the series of scientific reports from this museum. British Archaeological Reports has consented to produce a joint publication combining its International Series and the museum's Series of Reports. This latter series which has been edited by the undersigned, was started in 1971 and comprises mainly reports on archaeological, ethnological and historical investigations performed at the Swedish National Maritime Museum. Particular mention should be made of the reports 2 - 6 and 8 - 10 concerning the results of extensive ethnological and archaeological investigations along the northern part of the Swedish east coast, as well as reports 7, 11 - 14 and 16 - 17 dealing with ship archaeological and underwater archaeological development projects comprising six different investigations. All of these reports have summaries in English or German language. The contributions to this report are presented in more or less the same order as they were at the ISBSA meeting. The themes of the sessions are used as headings for the different sections of the report. The presentation of current ship archaeological projects dealing with material predating the postmedieval age, has been placed as the final section. The many papers from the ship archaeological field presented in this volume mirror a stage of development of the science in question. It also according to my opinion gives us useful information on important projects, source material and investigation methods.
