In December 1970, at the age of 69, Francis Chichester and Gipsy Moth V set out on a voyage south to Bissau, Portuguese Guinea. The target was to sail the 4,000 miles from Bissau to San Juan del Norte, Nicaragua, in twenty days: a staggering average of 200 miles a day, whatever the wind, whatever the weather.
