This beautiful produced publication presents an accurate listing of scientific names including author and date of description, plus used synonymy for many species of these spiny oyster shells. The Spondylus have always proved a difficult group to identify since there is great intraspecific variability. No two shells of any species are exactly alike and can differ markedly in shape, spining and colour, due to their sedentary habit and differing environments. In order to study them it is necessary to see many specimens of each species, hence the purpose of this book which describes in detail, 95 species, supported by full-page coloured plates.
