Originally published in 1889, this is a comprehensive guide to by means of illustrations and descriptions of all types of American steamships ranging from Rober Fultons's Clermont to the transatlantic passenger St. Louis built in 1895. Stanton's renderings are based on early prints, lithographs, drawings and plans. He depicts more than 250 ships and boats. Almost every vessel is accompanied by a smaller illustration of the same boat as well as text describing the length of hull, type of engine and boiler, and size of paddle wheels or propellers. Two hundred sixty eight vessels are documented.
