The yacht and shipbuilding yard Abeking & Rasmussen in Lemwerder near Bremen, founded in 1907 by yachtsman and designer Henry Rasmussen, has achieved a legendary reputation in its field for around 90 years. Some of the history of yachts was written here, for A&R design and building was always a technical leader, and A&R's boats - from sailing dinghies to intemational racing yachts - have achieved a worldwide reputation. Hundreds of these yachts and boats from the 20s, 30s and 50s are stili sailing today, and these carefully restored vintage craft stili tell - from Lake Constance to the coast of the Baltic Sea, in European waters and in the estuaries of the East coast of the United States - of the reputation of the Lemwerder yard. This book tells the story of the yard as well as of its famous vessels, their owners, and their voyages and races. Distinguished clients of the yard like Elizabeth Meyer and Rollo Gebhard have contributed essays to this work. The yacht building and sailing, portrayed in photographs of the yard's workshop and by international yacht photographers, range from simple sailing cruisers - in one of which farnous Ludwig Schlimbach was the first German to cross the Atlantic - up to mega yachts for famous owners like Fiat boss Agnelli. With a complete register of ali A&R construction, this chronicle tells the history of the yard as well as the important story of German and international yachting.
