During World War 2 the Royal Navy was embroiled in counter sabotage operations against Italian frogmen and human torpedo attacks in Gibraltar. The activities are best known through the 1958 film, ‘The Silent Enemy’ which dramatised the wartime underwater operations in Gibraltar. The film capitalised on the mysterious disappearance of one of the members of the diving team just two years earlier, Commander Lionel ‘Buster’. Silent Enemy placed Crabb at the centre of the action and the account was widely accepted as authentic. Historical cinema is often an unreliable window on the truth. The ‘silent hero’ of the Gibraltar operations was actually Lieutenant William ‘Bill’ Bailey. Operation Tadpole chronicles the true events of the wartime underwater operations in Gibraltar and finally reinstates Lieutenant Bailey’s place in history.
