The total work provides information on many notable ships as well as on a large number that are little known outside their native shores. Volume One of the series covers some 125 vessels that were placed in service from 1876 to 1912 by 21 companies from Australia and four from New Zealand. This provides an insight into the growth of passenger shipping around and between Australia and New Zealand combined with the beginnings of sea-trade from those countries across the Pacific and also to Britain.
